NIPT

Now you can take NIPT at Majorstua women's clinic. We are approved by the Norwegian Directorate of Health.

NIPT Skolen

Remember that you have to implement NIPTskolen.no before you book an appointment with us. This is also where you will get the results from the survey. You log in to NIPTskolen with bankID. Ultrasound is taken before blood test.

Before ordering a NIPT test, it is a good idea to think about the consequences of the potential answer. Although it is a simple survey, it is wise to think about how one will relate to the answer.

What is NIPT?

NIPT stands for Non Invasive Prenatal Test, and is what is called fetal diagnostics. This is a reliable method for detecting possible trisomy (extra chromosome). There are several types of Trisomy (we will write a little more about this in a separate blog post later), and with this test you can examine trisomy type 13 (Patau’s syndrome), 18 (Edward’s syndrome) and 21 (Down’s syndrome). Down syndrome is the most common. Pataus and Edward’s syndrome are more serious.

How to take NIPT?

The test is performed with a regular blood test from the mother’s arm, and in this way you can check the fetal DNA. The fetal DNA is released from the placenta during pregnancy, and during pregnancy this amount increases. From week 10 + 0, there is enough DNA from the fetus in the blood for it to be analyzed.

In addition to the NIPT blood test, an ultrasound can be performed between weeks 11 + 0 and 13 + 6. Here you look at the fetal development (eg internal organs, neck fold, spine) and you measure with the ultrasound machine. One can also look at how the placenta is places and the amount of amniotic fluid.

In Norway, it is only allowed to take a NIPT test if there is one child in the womb (not in case of twin pregnancy).

What happens next?

If there is a suspicion of chromosomal abnormalities based on the answers to the blood test, you will be contacted by us. We will inform you about the way forward, as well as refer to fetal diagnostics at the hospital if necessary. You can read more about NIPT here.

Where to take the NIPT test, and who can take it?

All women over the age of 35 are offered this in public. As of today, women under the age of 35 must take this privately (at clinics approved by the Norwegian Directorate of Health). All pregnant women from 10 + 0 are welcome with us.

Is there a risk with NIPT testing?

No. NIPT is only an ultrasound and blood test and does not pose any risk. It is therefore safe for both the fetus and for the mother.

When to take the NIPT test?

From week 10 + 0 and out throughout the pregnancy. We recommend coming between week 10 and until the end of week 12.
